Fair Warning, by Michael Connelly

This week I’m finishing up Michael Connelly’s newest, Fair Warning, featuring reporter Jack McEvoy. What appears to be a simple murder turns out to have much broader consequences.

I’m a huge fan of Connelly’s Hieronymus Bosch series, starting with The Black Echo. When I first ran out of Bosch books I sought out any other books written by Connelly. The Jack McEvoy series only had two books, The Poet and The Scarecrow, but the character was just as memorable as Harry Bosch an Mickey Haller, which probably has a lot to do with the fact that Connelly started his career as a reporter.

Amazon Description: Veteran reporter Jack McEvoy has taken down killers before, but when a woman he had a one-night stand with is murdered in a particularly brutal way, McEvoy realizes he might be facing a criminal mind unlike any he’s ever encountered.

Jack investigates–against the warnings of the police and his own editor–and makes a shocking discovery that connects the crime to other mysterious deaths across the country. Undetected by law enforcement, a vicious killer has been hunting women, using genetic data to select and stalk his targets.

Uncovering the murkiest corners of the dark web, Jack races to find and protect the last source who can lead him to his quarry. But the killer has already chosen his next target, and he’s ready to strike.

Set the Terms, edited by Mia R. Kleve & Kevin Ikenberry

And this week I’m blowing my own horn. Set the Terms is my first on-cover credit. As someone who started out as a reader and fan of Mark Wandrey’s and Chris Kennedy’s Four Horsemen Universe, I couldn’t be more thrilled with the stories that we collected for this anthology.

The stories in Set the Terms focus on the Peacemakers, the law enforcement guild of the Galactic Union. You get to see them from the beginning of the guild, the beginning of their careers, the end of their careers, and the many methods they have to use to do their job.

This anthology is also a great place to jump in even if you haven’t read any other books in the series.

Amazon Description: Peacemakers. The Galactic Union’s most capable enforcers and resolute negotiators, their name alone elicits fear and awe among the Union’s citizenry.

Being a Peacemaker isn’t easy. They’re charged with setting the terms and doing anything which needs to be done—even if it personally costs them everything. They must learn to honor the threat to all life, and, in the end, they must stand or fall, based on their own convictions.

Welcome back to the Four Horsemen universe, where only a willingness to fight and die for money separates Humans from the majority of the other races. Edited by Mia R. Kleve and bestselling author Kevin Ikenberry, Set the Terms includes fourteen all-new Peacemaker-themed stories in the Four Horsemen universe by a variety of bestselling authors—and some you may not have heard of…yet.

From pigs flying to cats landing on their feet, Set the Terms shows Peacemakers at work from the origin of the guild to present day. Journey with a Lumar Peacemaker as he tries to complete his first mission and watch as a Phidae Peacemaker tries to complete his final one. They will have to use their wits as well as their weapons if they hope to remain standing at the end of the day.

Are you ready to set the terms? If so, then step inside!
